Filter (Mamuto PB)

If there was a coffee to buy, it’s this one.

Sourced by Condesa, chosen by Anthony, roasted by head roaster Louis, this Kenyan from First Love is incredible.

This mighty SL-28’s peaberry has outshone every other coffee I have at the moment. Every morning, with the options in my freezer calling me, I always reach for this one.

Its so velvety, has medium-high acidity, balanced, a fairy high body and just so incredibly sweet.

There’s a reason why most coffee professionals adore Kenyan coffees, and this Mamuto is the reason why.

For those wondering, PB stands for Peaberry, it’s where instead of the usual two beans forming within a coffee cherry, only one forms. This allows that singular bean to absorb and pack all the sugars and flavour that would normally be split between two.

Just buy it. its so good, you’d want to buy two (they don’t have a lot left).

a side note:

My first ever barista job was at Rustica (the parent company tied to First Love). I have always been grateful for the chance they gave a passionate barista straight out of high school who studied coffee non-stop at home.

Something I have been even more grateful for is the friendship it created for me with Louis (the head roaster at First Love).

Sometimes it can get easy to get caught up in science and innovaiton in Coffee that we forget the best part: relationships.

The specialty coffee industry is full of passionate hard working people but among them, there are people like Louis.

To me, he has always been someone who truly loves what they’re doing, putting genuine care into their work, having fun, and enjoying the process. A personified reminder to always take a step back and remember what makes this job so special.

Despite all this connection I’ve had with First Love, I only just addded them to the “best roasters” page. This is because I’ve been cupping First Love’s coffee every month since leaving and something was always a little off. However after opening their new roastery in Footscray I have been so impressed.

Almost every coffee they have pick are unique to those on the market and when its good, its really good (this kenyan).

I’ll always have a sentimental attatchment to First Love, but I can assure you that this Kenyan is good beyond any bias.

…for those who read all this: thank you

Roaster’s Remarks:

Origin: Kenya

Farm: Mamuto

Variety: SL28 (Peaberry)

Altitude: 1600 MASL

Process: Washed

Tasting note: Blackberry, Cranberry, Nectarine

The Mamuto farm is a pioneer in its quality driven dedication to the SL28 variety, prioritising its unique sweet flavour. This particular coffee is derived from the “Peaberry” lot. Where occasionally, coffee trees produce single beans inside the cherry, resulting in small round shaped beans called peaberries. Kenyan coffee is the sweetest coffee there is, and Mamuto's SL-28 variety is no exception. It has sweet acidity and gorgeous fruit flavours.

When Mamuto is roasted and brewed correctly, it has a velvety body which coats your mouth. We suggest drinking our Mamuto black to fully enjoy the complex flavours. No milk or sugar, just natural sweetness.

The Mamuto farm has put the region of Kirinyaga on the map! Raising awareness for small coffee farmers and bringing seekers of exceptional coffee to the area.

Kenya has developed the strictest processing and milling standards in the world. Beans are sorted in very narrow ranges of size in order to maintain even roasting, with Grade AA comprising the two largest sizes and AB being the next two sizes. Mamuto is machine sorted and then hand sorted to remove any remaining blemishes.
